Alibaba and AliExpress share an owner but serve very different buyers. This guide compares price, MOQ, quality control, GST and duty, runs a landed-cost example in AUD, and shows when a sourcing agent beats both. Written for Gold Coast eBay, Shopify and Amazon sellers.

In short: Use Alibaba when you want to buy in bulk from factories and wholesalers. Use AliExpress when you want to test a product with a handful of units. Alibaba is cheaper per unit but needs MOQs, freight and customs. AliExpress is simpler but costs more per item. Once you are past testing, a sourcing agent usually beats both.

If you run an online store on the Gold Coast, you have probably opened both sites in different tabs and wondered which one is right. Both belong to the same group, but they are built for very different jobs. Let's break it down.

What is the difference between Alibaba and AliExpress?

Alibaba is a business-to-business marketplace where factories and trading companies sell in bulk with minimum order quantities (MOQs). AliExpress is a retail marketplace where you buy single units or small lots at a higher price per item, shipped direct to your door.

  • Alibaba: bulk pricing, MOQs from dozens to thousands, custom branding possible, you handle freight and customs.
  • AliExpress: no MOQ, fixed retail pricing, standard shipping, limited customisation.

Which is cheaper for Australian importers?

Alibaba is almost always cheaper per unit once you order in volume, but it carries extra costs for freight, duty and clearance. Here is an illustrative landed-cost example for 500 units of a small homewares item. Real prices vary by product.

  • Alibaba: 500 units at A$4.80 = A$2,400. Freight and insurance A$600. Customs value A$3,000. Duty at 5% = A$150. Broker and clearance A$250. Landed cost before GST: about A$3,400, or A$6.80 per unit.
  • AliExpress: 500 units at A$9.00 = A$4,500, with GST charged at checkout. About A$9.00 per unit plus GST.

In this example Alibaba saves roughly A$2.20 per unit, or about A$1,100 on the order. For a deeper look at calculating this, see our landed cost guide.

How do GST and duty work for each platform?

For consignments valued at A$1,000 or less, GST is collected by the platform at sale and there is generally no customs duty. Above that value, formal import rules apply: duty, GST and an import declaration. Bulk Alibaba orders usually land in the second bucket.

Which platform is safer?

Neither is risk-free. AliExpress offers buyer protection on small orders. Alibaba has Trade Assurance on eligible orders, but you still have to verify the supplier yourself, because many listings come from trading companies, not factories.

When should I use Alibaba, AliExpress or something else?

1. Testing a product idea

Use AliExpress. Order two or three units, check quality and fit before you commit money.

2. Ordering your first batch with your logo

Use Alibaba. Branding, packaging and custom colours are possible, but ask for samples first.

3. Reordering at scale

Go factory-direct or through a sourcing agent. Platform prices carry a margin for the platform and the middleman.

4. Chinese-language wholesale prices

FAQs: Alibaba vs AliExpress

Is Alibaba cheaper than AliExpress?

Per unit, yes, once you order at MOQ. Total cost depends on freight, duty and clearance, so always compare landed cost, not unit price.

Can I buy from Alibaba in small quantities?

Some suppliers accept low MOQs, often at a higher price. Sample orders are usually possible but cost more per unit.

Do I pay GST on Alibaba and AliExpress orders?

Yes. GST of 10% applies to imported goods. Low-value consignments have it collected at sale, while larger imports pay it at the border. GST-registered businesses can usually claim it back.

Is AliExpress good for dropshipping in Australia?

It works for testing, but long delivery times and inconsistent quality can hurt reviews. Many sellers move to bulk stock once a product proves itself.

Should I use a sourcing agent instead of Alibaba?

If you want verified factories, negotiated prices and quality checks, yes. An agent protects you from the platform's biggest risks.
