Choosing a Sydney freight forwarder for China or Vietnam imports? Here's how to compare quotes line by line, what Port Botany costs to expect, how deferred GST helps cash flow, and the red flags to avoid.

In short: a good Sydney freight forwarder quotes door-to-door, itemises every charge, handles customs through a licensed broker, and has real agents at the China or Vietnam end. Compare quotes line by line, not by headline price. The cheapest quote usually hides the most add-ons.
A freight forwarder books space on the ship, arranges pickup from your supplier, lodges customs paperwork and organises delivery from Port Botany to your door. Think of them as the project manager for your container. New to the term? Our freight forwarder guide covers the basics.
Check five things before you sign anything:
A proper quote lists origin handling, ocean freight, bunker and peak-season surcharges, Port Botany terminal handling, DAFF biosecurity inspection fees if relevant, customs clearance, cartage and any unpacking charges. If a line is missing, ask. Our landed cost guide shows how to roll these into a per-unit cost.
As a rough rule, once you pass about 15 cubic metres, a full container (FCL) is often cheaper and safer than shared space (LCL). LCL adds consolidation handling at both ends and slower release. Read the full breakdown in FCL vs LCL for Australian importers.
Registered importers can use the deferred GST scheme to report import GST on their BAS instead of paying it at the border. That keeps cash in your business. Confirm eligibility with your accountant and broker.
These figures are illustrative assumptions only, not a quote. Goods value AUD 30,000 (FOB). Ocean freight and insurance about AUD 3,200. Duty at 5% on the FOB customs value is AUD 1,500. Port, customs and cartage in Sydney roughly AUD 1,400. Landed cost ex-GST is about AUD 36,100, or AUD 36.10 per unit across 1,000 units. GST of roughly AUD 3,470 (10% of FOB + freight + duty) can be deferred. Compare this to how FOB terms shift responsibility between you and the supplier.

Rates move with the market, so get a current quote. Budget for ocean freight plus Australian-side port, customs and cartage charges on top.
Typically around 2 to 4 weeks port to port, plus pickup, clearance and delivery time.
Most importers use one. Your forwarder usually arranges a licensed broker to lodge the import declaration.
LCL suits small first orders. FCL becomes more economical as volume grows.
