Australia's home battery market has exploded, and a lot of new importers are about to learn an expensive lesson. Here's the compliance-first guide to bringing solar batteries in from China — CEC listing, AS/NZS 5139, RCM marking, dangerous goods freight, and a worked landed-cost example in AUD.

In short: You can absolutely import home battery storage from China — nearly every battery installed in Australia is made there anyway — but this is one of the most heavily regulated product categories an Australian importer can touch. Before you pay a deposit you need the unit listed on the Clean Energy Council Approved Products List, compliance with AS/NZS 5139, an inverter meeting AS/NZS 4777.2, RCM marking, and a valid UN38.3 report so the freight can legally move. Skip any one of those and you own a shipping container full of expensive, unsellable metal.
Because demand went vertical. The federal battery rebate introduced in 2025 knocked a large chunk off the installed cost of home storage, and household uptake followed immediately. South Australia was already the most battery-dense market in the country — Adelaide installers had waiting lists before the rebate landed, and the queue got longer afterwards.
That demand has pulled a wave of new players into the category: solar installers wanting to control their own supply, electrical wholesalers adding storage to the catalogue, and entrepreneurs who've spotted the margin and want to build a private-label brand.
The margin is real. So is the compliance burden, and it is not optional.
This is the part that catches people. A battery can be perfectly good, perfectly safe, and still be worthless to you commercially because it isn't listed in the right places.

Two of those deserve special attention.
A factory saying "we are CEC approved" means nothing. The specific model, in the specific configuration, has to appear on the list. If you ask a factory to change the enclosure, the BMS or the cell supplier for your private-label version, you may have just created a product that is no longer the listed product.
As the Australian importer you are the responsible supplier. Not the Chinese factory, not your customer, not the installer. You hold the compliance folder, and you carry the liability if something goes wrong. Our guide to RCM certification for electronics explains what that actually involves.
Lithium batteries are Class 9 dangerous goods. Standalone battery packs ship under UN3480; batteries packed with or contained in equipment ship under UN3481. That classification changes everything about your freight.

Note that compliance is a real, sizeable line item — and it's front-loaded. On your first 50 units it might be $120 each; across 500 units it's closer to $12. This is why home batteries are a poor category for a small test order and a good one for a committed importer.

The gap between the best and worst suppliers in this category is wider than almost anything else we source. Some things to insist on:
The pack assembler is often not the cell manufacturer. Ask which cells are inside — tier-one Chinese cell makers have real quality systems and traceable batch data. Reused, downgraded or B-grade cells are a genuine safety hazard and they do end up in cheap packs.
The battery management system is what stops a thermal event. Ask for its specification, its protection thresholds, and evidence it has been tested as part of the complete system rather than bolted on.
Not a certificate image — the full report, with the model number matching what you're buying and a lab you can independently verify. Certificate fraud is common in this category.
Australian consumers expect a 10-year battery warranty. If your factory offers two years and no local support structure, you are the warranty. Price that in or walk away.
Pre-shipment inspection with capacity testing on a sample of units. A battery that doesn't deliver its rated kWh is the most common quality failure in the category, and you cannot see it in a photo.
Legally you can import it, but commercially it's close to worthless. Without CEC listing your customers can't claim the federal rebate, and most accredited installers won't touch it because installing unlisted equipment puts their own accreditation at risk. Confirm the exact model is listed before you pay a deposit.
For large home storage packs, effectively no. Air carriers heavily restrict standalone lithium batteries above certain watt-hour ratings, and where it is permitted the cost usually destroys the commercial case. Plan on sea freight and build 6–8 weeks of transit and clearance into your timeline.
AS/NZS 5139 is the Australian standard covering the safety of battery energy storage systems and how they're installed — enclosure requirements, ventilation, separation distances, signage and protection. Both the product and the installation must comply. Ask your supplier for evidence of testing against it, and be aware that installers will refuse jobs where the equipment can't be installed compliantly.
Realistically 4–6 months for a first shipment if compliance isn't already sorted: 2–3 months for testing, certification and CEC listing (if the model isn't already listed), 30–45 days production, and 3–4 weeks shipping and clearance. If you buy an already-listed model, you can cut that to about 10–12 weeks.
Reselling an established, CEC-listed brand gets you to market fastest with the compliance burden largely handled. Private labelling gives you far better margin and brand control, but you take on certification, listing, warranty liability and the risk that any product change invalidates an existing approval.
