Yes — and for most industrial machines you'll land it in Australia for 40–60% less than buying through a local distributor. The catch isn't the buying. It's that machinery carries obligations consumer goods don't: work health and safety duties as an importer of plant, AS/NZS machine guarding requirements, electrical compliance, and freight that won't fit in a standard container. Get those four right and machinery is one of the highest-margin things an Australian business can import. Get them wrong and you'll own a very expensive paperweight sitting in a Fremantle yard.
I've watched Perth fabricators, food processors and workshops pay distributor prices for years because nobody told them the machine in the showroom and the machine in the Chinese factory catalogue are frequently the same unit with a different badge. Here's how to do it properly.
Because the margin stack on capital equipment in Australia is brutal. A machine leaves a Chinese factory, goes to a regional distributor, then to an Australian importer, then to a dealer, then to you. Each layer adds 25–40%. When you buy direct you remove three of them.

The resources sector, mining services, and the fabrication shops that feed them all run on plant — CNC machines, press brakes, laser cutters, conveyors, crushers, pumps, compressors. And because WA is a long way from the eastern-states distributor network, local mark-ups are typically the highest in the country.

China genuinely leads on most of these. Chinese fibre laser and CNC router manufacturing in particular has matured to the point where the machines going into Australian workshops are the same units European brands rebadge.
This is the part distributors quietly handle for you, and the part that catches direct importers out. Under Australian work health and safety law, when you import plant you become a "person conducting a business or undertaking" with designer/manufacturer/importer duties. In plain terms: you are legally responsible for the machine being safe to use, not the factory in Guangdong.
Practically, that means four things:
The machine must meet Australian guarding, emergency-stop and isolation expectations. Chinese domestic-market machines are frequently built to a lower guarding standard than Australia accepts — open belt drives, missing interlocks, an e-stop that cuts the control circuit but not the power. This is fixable, but it has to be specified before production, not discovered on arrival.
Some plant must be registered with the WA regulator (or your state equivalent) before use — certain cranes, pressure vessels, lifts, and amusement devices. Some requires a design registration as well. Check the classification before you order, because a design registration on an unregisterable design is not a problem money solves.

Operating and maintenance manuals in English, an electrical schematic, a declaration of conformity, and — if it's registrable — design documentation. Write all of this into the purchase order. A factory that agrees verbally and delivers a 12-page Chinese-language pamphlet is not being malicious; it just wasn't in the contract.

Because Australia runs 415V three-phase at 50Hz, and China runs 380V three-phase at 50Hz. A machine built for 380V will often run on 415V, but the motor, contactors and control transformer are all sitting above their design voltage. Sometimes it's fine for years. Sometimes the control transformer cooks in month three and you're arguing about warranty across nine time zones.
Specify this explicitly on every quote: 415V, 3-phase, 50Hz, neutral and earth configuration, and the plug/termination type. A good factory will fit the correct transformer and motor for a few hundred dollars. Ask for the electrical schematic showing it before you pay the balance.
The same discipline applies to compressed-air fittings, hydraulic couplings, and anything measured in imperial versus metric. None of it is expensive to get right up front. All of it is expensive to fix in Perth.
Most machinery is too heavy or too large for a neat container load, so the options are:
Two Perth-specific realities. First, Fremantle has fewer direct sailings from northern Chinese ports than the east coast, so transit from Qingdao or Tianjin often routes via Singapore and adds a week or two. Note the duty line. Most industrial machinery enters Australia duty-free under the China–Australia Free Trade Agreement, but only with a valid certificate of origin from the supplier. Machinery is unforgiving in a way that consumer goods aren't. A dud batch of drink bottles costs you the batch. A dud machine costs you the machine plus your production for however long it takes to sort out. Four things protect you:

Insist on a factory acceptance test: the machine running your material, to your tolerance, on video or with someone physically present. Our China team does this routinely and it is the single highest-value hour in the entire process. A pre-shipment inspection on a $48,000 machine costs a few hundred dollars.
Ask for the parts list with part numbers, and order a spares kit with the machine — the wear items, one spare controller board, seals and belts. Air-freighting a proprietary board from China takes a fortnight; having it on the shelf takes a phone call. Then confirm whether the drive, controller and motors are recognised brands (Siemens, Delta, Yaskawa, Fanuc) or house-brand. Recognised brands mean an Australian technician can service it.

Importing direct is typically 40–60% cheaper on landed cost for comparable equipment. A dealer's price includes local warranty, service, spare parts on the shelf and someone to call — real value if your machine is production-critical and you have no in-house maintenance capability. If you have a decent maintenance fitter, or the machine isn't a single point of failure, importing direct is usually the better commercial decision.
Most industrial machinery is duty-free under ChAFTA, provided your supplier issues a valid certificate of origin. You will still pay 10% GST on the value of the taxable importation, which is recoverable if you're GST-registered. Without a certificate of origin you'll typically pay 5% duty, so always request it in writing at the quoting stage.
Budget 12–20 weeks door to door. Production on a made-to-order machine is usually 30–60 days, inspection and packing another 1–2 weeks, sea freight to Fremantle 18–30 days depending on the origin port and whether it tranships through Singapore, then 1–2 weeks for customs clearance, biosecurity and delivery. Standard catalogue machines held in stock can be considerably quicker.
You are. As the importer of plant you carry designer, manufacturer and importer duties under Australian WHS law, and the overseas factory is effectively beyond reach.
