EV charging hardware is one of the fastest-growing import categories in Australia — and one of the easiest to get wrong. Here's the compliance, cost and supplier reality for Newcastle and Hunter businesses bringing chargers in from China.

In short: You can import EV chargers from China to Australia, and the unit economics are excellent — a 7kW single-phase wall charger that retails for $1,100–$1,800 in Australia typically lands for $180–$320 per unit at volume. But EV chargers are electrical equipment, not gadgets. Before you sell one, you need RCM marking, evidence of compliance with the AS/NZS 61851 series, and registration as a Responsible Supplier under the Electrical Equipment Safety System (EESS). Skip that paperwork and your container becomes a very expensive paperweight.
Because the demand curve and the supply curve are pointing in opposite directions. Australian EV uptake has moved from early-adopter novelty to mainstream, and every one of those vehicles needs somewhere to plug in overnight. Meanwhile, the overwhelming majority of the world's EVSE (electric vehicle supply equipment) is manufactured in Guangdong, Zhejiang and Jiangsu.
For Hunter region electrical wholesalers, solar installers and fit-out contractors, this is a natural category extension. You already have the licensed electricians, the trade customer base and the van fleet. Adding a branded charger to the offer turns a one-off install into a margin-carrying product line — and the landed cost gap between a private-label unit and a European-badged one is enormous.
The businesses that struggle are the ones that treat a charger like a phone accessory. It isn't. It's a 32-amp permanently connected appliance sitting on the side of someone's house.
Four things, and you need all of them before the first unit is sold.
1. Electrical safety to AS/NZS 61851. This is the standard series covering conductive charging systems for electric vehicles. Your supplier must be able to produce a test report from a recognised laboratory showing the specific model you are buying — not a similar model, not last year's revision — meets it.
2. The RCM (Regulatory Compliance Mark). The RCM signals compliance with both electrical safety and ACMA's electromagnetic compatibility requirements. 3. EESS registration. EV chargers are classified electrical equipment. That means registering as a Responsible Supplier on the national database and registering the equipment itself at the appropriate risk level, with a Certificate of Conformity held on file. 4. Installation compliance. AS/NZS 3000 (the Wiring Rules) governs how the unit is installed, and only a licensed electrician can do it. This isn't your obligation as an importer, but your trade customers will ask, and getting it wrong destroys your brand faster than any price war.
Here's a realistic worked example for a first container of 7kW single-phase Type 2 wall chargers, landed in Newcastle via Port Botany. Figures are indicative and in AUD.

Two things jump out. First, freight is almost irrelevant at this unit density — chargers are small and light, so the container maths works heavily in your favour. Second, the compliance line is the one most importers forget to budget, and it's the only line that can stop you selling entirely. Ask for the test report first and the price second. A serious EVSE manufacturer will send a full AS/NZS 61851 report for the exact model within a day. A trading company pretending to be a factory will send you a CE certificate for a different product and hope you don't read it.
From there, the questions that separate good factories from expensive mistakes:

For almost every EV charger shipment, Port Botany plus road freight up the M1 is the right answer. Container services into Sydney are far more frequent, transit times are shorter and your customs broker deals with Botany every day. The extra couple of hundred dollars in road freight across a full container is noise.
Port of Newcastle makes sense for bulk, project cargo and oversize consignments — not for a pallet-stacked container of wall-mounted units. Talk to your freight forwarder about consolidating chargers with other product lines to fill a 40ft container rather than paying LCL rates on a part load.
You can buy them. Legally reselling them is a different matter. The listing's CE mark means nothing here — you need Australian compliance evidence, RCM marking and EESS registration, and the responsibility sits with you as the importer. Most Alibaba-listed chargers have never been tested to AS/NZS 61851.
Typically 100–300 units for a factory's existing model with your branding, and 500–1,000 units if you want tooling changes or a custom enclosure. Some factories will quote 50 units at a significant price premium for a first trial order.
Generally no. Under the China–Australia Free Trade Agreement, most electrical equipment of Chinese origin enters at 0% duty provided you hold a valid Certificate of Origin. You will still pay 10% GST on the landed value. Always confirm the tariff classification with your customs broker.
Realistically 14–20 weeks from first supplier contact to stock on your shelf: 3–4 weeks sourcing and quoting, 3–4 weeks sampling and testing, 4–6 weeks production, 4–5 weeks sea freight and customs. Compliance testing runs in parallel if you plan it properly.
